LED lighting was recently installed in a San Diego, California restaurant location,
producing big gains in efficiency as well as light output levels. As part of a combined evaluation effort, recessed lighting in the restaurant was replaced with Cree LED recessed light products and fluorescent tubes were replaced with Seesmart ® LED T8 Tubes. A total of 56 32 Watt T8 4100K fluorescent tubes and their associated ballasts were removed. Seesmart LED T8 Tubes were then installed in the existing fixtures in various locations throughout the restaurant. The locations and the associated before and after LED light output readings are provided in the table below.

Integrated Food Service
Integrated Food Service (IFS) is a private company that manufactures food products for food and nutrition policy programs. IFS recently built a new food processing room at their facility in Gardena, California. After getting an initial lighting plan and proposal using fluorescent lighting from a traditional lighting contractor, they contacted Seesmart® to provide a quote for an energy efficient LED lighting solution. However, IFS provided some challenges in selecting a proper lighting package that would provide enough light for their operations, but also stand up to their work environment. Lighting products need to be able to endure almost round-
the -clock operation with splashes from nightly hot water wash downs. Seesmart® developed and tested a few lighting plans and scenarios using
various LED products before finalizing on using LED T8 Tube Lights mounted in a sealed LED 4’ tube light fixture offered by Seesmart®. This IP65 -rated (dust and moisture infiltration penetration rating) clear prismatic wraparound fixture works well for IFS since it is keeps dust and water out of the fixtures, and it is flush mounted to the ceiling, which means that flour and dust will not accumulate on top of the fixtures, saving them a great amount of time and labor normally devoted to cleaning the tops of the fixtures for health department reasons. IFS chose the Cool White LED T8 tubes with the clear lens to get the maximum amount of light possible without sacrificing color rendering qualities. The 21 fixtures installed in the room each draw 60 Watts of power, adding up to a total draw of 1,620 Watts for the entire 1,530 square feet of processing area while providing 105 foot-candles of light, which is more than the USDA 100 foot-candle requirement for food processing work areas.
This installation saves more than 1,836 Watts when compared to the same installation using 32 Watt fluorescent tubes. IFS is working with Seesmart® to determine the additional savings on their HVAC load reduction with the LED Tube Lights for this new space and for other rooms at their campus. Since the room must be kept at 55°F, lower operating temperatures of the LEDs help reduce the load on the cooling system. IFS is also developing plans to outfit more of its existing buildings with LED lighting products to take further advantage of the many benefits of Seesmart® LEDs.
